This module was used as a one week lesson to present a case study of tropical deforestation in Conservation Biology and a Belize class at Sewanee. In both classes, students were placed in pairs and assigned a threat. They had to use all the literature, news clips, and videos under their threat to outline them in powerpoint presentation as well as delve into the viable solutions and propose novel solutions. After students presented, the class asked questions and engaged in conversations to further unpack the threats and solutions. Students were evaluated based on their ability to delve into all of the information for both their threat and the solutions. At the end of the class, students were asked to evaluate the effectiveness of the module in presenting the complexity of the case study. We recommend this method as a way of using this module in a class setting as the student module evaluations showed it to be an effective method of use. In addition to learning about the threats and solutions, the students engaged in a fundraising project for the NGO using Indiegogo. Below is more information about the fundraiser.

Illegal Palm Harvest
During the class project, Professor Jon Evans class raised funds using Indiegogo, a crowdfunding site, where they wrote a brief overview and attached a video. They had a donate link on the main website after each video, to encourage people to donate after watching the videos. They also put the link on Facebook and other social media sites and sent it to friends and family. This is a link to the fundraising page:
Fundraising is simple but the crowdfunding websites are not always clear, so these step by step instructions were designed to provide some clarification.
Indiegogo Fundraising Step by Step:
1. First, decide on a crowfunding source. Indiegogo, GoFundMe, and Kickstarter are some of the most common ones currently in use. Indiegogo is highly recommended because Indiegogo directly disburses the money to any account specified, even abroad. The instructions following will be specifically for Indiegogo.
2. Make an account.
3. Then select Start Your Campaign and select the campaign type, how much you would like to raise, and a campaign title and then click Create My Campaign. Make sure you set a reasonable goal, but not one that is too low that does not challenge you.
4. You will then be taken to a page with 7 tabs on the left side. Click on each of the tabs beginning with Basics and fill out the boxes.
For the Story tab, it is highly recommended that you put in a video instead of a picture because videos are more engaging and captivating for the audience.
For the Funding tab, read more about it on this page to select the appropriate funding type for your campaign. If you are raising money for a non-profit in the U.S., make sure you have the 501(c)(3) number.
5. Once you have finished completing the necessary information and tabs for your campaign, click Review and Launch.
6. Now you are ready to share a link to your campaign through email and social media to spread the word and reach your goal. And if you have a website, put the donate button (widget) on your site.
7. Once the campaign is over and it is time to have the funds distributed, make sure you have the bank account information where the money is going. If it is an international bank, make sure you have the following information:
Recipient bank details
- Recipient bank name, address and country
- Recipient bank’s routing code and recipient’s account number
- SWIFT Code, National ID or IBAN number of the bank where the receiving account is located
- Purpose for transfer
